A Mild Steel Break Plate (often spelled "Break Plate" or referred to as a Backing Plate, Support Plate, or Sacrificial Plate, depending on context) is a flat metal component made of mild steel (low-carbon steel), typically used in mechanical, structural, or safety applications where controlled deformation or breakage is needed.

A Break Plate made from mild steel (MS) is designed to:

• Support or distribute loads

• Absorb impact or deformation

• Fail or deform under specific conditions (e.g. overpressure, mechanical overload)

Depending on the application, it can either act as a sacrificial component or a structural support.
